Welcome to the 3DEM Web site

This is the home page for the 3-dimensional electron microscopy (3DEM) mailing list. The 3DEM list is a primary communication source among experts in the field of molecular and cellular electron microscopy.

Postings include upcoming conferences, announcements, job listings and technical queries. Please note that the list is restricted and postings are monitored for content.

For dates, locations and anticipated attendance of major national meetings check out the FASEB, Biophysical Society, American Association for Cell Biology, and Microscopy Society of America.

2018 Gordon Research Conference on Ligand Recognition & Molecular Gating
Ventura Beach Marriott, Ventura, CA.
March 4-9 2018

The principle goal of this GRC is to share the latest knowledge and expertise on the mechanism and function of G-protein coupled receptors, transporters, and ion channels. The conference is preceded by the Gordon Research Seminar on the same topic, which will give opportunities to young scientists to present their work. We have invited a fantastic list of speakers and there are still a large number of poster presentations available.

  • Industrial BioStructures America 2018 Conference in San Diego
Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines Hotel
    May 20-22, 2018

This new conference series brings together industrial scientists working with protein structures as part of drug discovery and design. Held at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines Hotel, items of particular interest to Cryo-EM scientists are the Keynote Lecture by Sriram Subramaniam, a panel of experts discussing "Cryo-EM in Industry", plus a regular session with results using Cryo-EM. Other session topics will include membrane crystallography, protein construct design, lead identification using NMR and structure based drug design using X-ray crystallography. The abstract submission deadline is March 23. Confirmed speakers, so far, are on the website.

2018 Annual Meeting of American Crystallographic Association in Toronto
(sponsored by the Biological Macromolecules and Light Sources SIGs).
    July 20-24, 2018

On July 22 there will be a full day of presentations from CryoEM scientists with morning and afternoon scientific sessions chaired by Wah Chiu (Stanford U) and Lori Passmore (MRC-LMB).
    Invited speakers include:

  • Joachim Frank (Columbia University) (tentative)
  • Nieng Yang (Princeton U)
  • Maofu Liao (Harvard U)
  • Kiyoshi Nagai (MRC LMB, Cambridge)
  • Xiaodong Zhang (Imperial College, London)
  • Gabe Lander (Scripps research Institute)

  • Wah Chiu, Lori Passmore, and John Rubinstein (U Toronto) are also co-organizing a full day workshop on July 20 entitled "CryoEM - A guide to high-resolution structure determination." The aim of the workshop is to provide a detailed overview of specimen preparation, image processing and building/refinement of atomic models, with focus on high-resolution single particle cryo-EM. Aspects of image processing and modelling will be hands-on with state-the-art programs used by workshop students to process sample datasets.
